On the 28th (local time), market research company IDC reported that smartphone shipments rose 25.5% in the first quarter of 2021 compared with the same period last year.

パンデミックの中スマホ出荷台数が25.5%増。上位常連だったHuaweiは姿を消す

About 300 million smartphones went on sale in the first quarter alone, especially in China and the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan). Compared with the same period last year, China grew by 30% and the Asia-Pacific region by 28%. Responsible for half of the world's shipments.

In the first quarter of last year (2020), supply chains were shut down and China locked in due to an epidemic of novel coronavirus infection, especially during a period of declining shipments. However, the current analysis believes that the growth rate is still 11% compared with the first quarter of 2019, so IDC analysis believes that the smartphone replacement cycle and the new 5G features have driven the growth.

In terms of market share in the first quarter of 2021, Samsung,21.8%, ranked first and second was Apple, with 16%, followed by China's Xiaomi (14.1%), OPPO (10.8%) and vivo (10.1%). Huawei, once one of the top regulars, finally disappeared from the top five under the weight of US sanctions.

Samsung believes that in the flagship Galaxy S21 series, the $200 shutdown price strategy worked, and Apple iPhone 12 performed well. On the other hand, from mid-range to low-end phones, Xiaomi and other Chinese forces have well entered the hole pulled out by Huawei and gained market share.
