Mac Studio and Studio Display

Get a review of Mac Studio and Studio Display. It was announced at the same time, and I get the impression that it is a "real set" in terms of design, but its characteristics are not necessarily the same. I think it's suitable to use as a set, but in fact, it feels like a product with a slightly different vector. I would like to describe the impression of using each.

The number of cores is fast.Overwhelming performance difference

First from Mac Studio. The feature of Mac Studio is "power" after all. In particular, some people may be wondering how much performance the top-of-the-line model equipped with "M1 Ultra" can produce.

Mac Studio. The model rented this time is equipped with M1 Ultra

The evaluation equipment rented out this time is a model that can be said to be a "special" model with 64 cores of GPU and 128 GB of memory among the M1 Ultra. There is also 2TB of storage, and the selling price will be 741,800 yen with this alone. Before I say anything, let me show you the values of various benchmarks as a result.

We prepared three other equipment for this test. The MacBook Pro with M1 (2020 model), the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro (2021 model), and ASUS "ROG Zephyrus G14" (2021 model) as a gaming PC. The CPU of ROG Zephyrus G14 is AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS, and the GPU is NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Max-Q. As a PC equipped with a discrete GPU, it is prepared for comparison this time. For convenience, ROG Zephyrus G14 is hereafter referred to as the "gaming PC".

Benchmarks are all multi-platform, except for the last video editing system. First of all, from the CPU test of "Geekbench 5". This result is easy to understand. The number of CPU cores is reflected in the speed as it is, and Mac Studio with 20 cores is by far the best.

Geekcbench 5 CPU test. The easy-to-understand result was that it was faster by the number of cores.

I also tried "Cinebench R23" as a benchmark for a little more function specialization. This measures the speed of CG calculation and mainly depends on the CPU. Again, the trend is the same as Geekbench 5. Even if there is a difference in the performance of one core, the number of cores seems to be a big deal after all.

Results of Cinebench R23.This is also a test result according to the number of CPU cores.

What's interesting is that the Cinebench R23 results show that the M1 Ultra no longer has only a 32-core "Ryzen Threadripper 2990 WX" or a 24-core "Xeon W-3265M" in terms of multi-core CPU performance. Again, the "number of cores" is the issue after all. The M1 Ultra can be said to be on par with these high-end processors.

The Cinebench R23 also offers per-CPU values that have been tested in the past, but only two ultra-high-ends with more cores are faster than the M1 Ultra.

How about the GPU? In the Geekbench 5 test, I was surprised to lose to the gaming PC with RTX 3060. However, it may be because this is a test result with OpenCL, not Metal, which Mac is good at.

GPU test with Geekbench 5. It is a test using OpenCL, but the gaming PC equipped with RTX 3060 is higher.

So, as another test, I used "3DMark Wild Life Extreme". Among the standard 3D benchmarks, 3DMark, it covers everything from smartphones to PCs. Among them, "Extreme" is for high-end. Use this in "Unlimited" mode.

Also tested on the multi-platform 3D benchmark "3DMark Wild Life Extreme"

The results are as follows. Mac Studio is overwhelming in both score and frame rate. Perhaps it's not just an optimization issue, but the ability to use a vast area of unified memory is a plus.

Test score in "3DMark Wild Life Extreme". The value of Mac Studio is overwhelming with 35159

Frame rate score in "3DMark Wild Life Extreme". Mac Studio has 210 frames and gaming PC has 75 frames, which is quite different.

Then how about in practice? This is a test only on Mac, but using Apple's video editing software "Final Cut Pro", 4K / HDR shot video was added with camera shake correction, grading, and editing work to make a video of 2 minutes 51 seconds. Is measured as a 4K / H.264 file.

As a result, the performance of M1 Ultra shines. It's a fairly heavy task, and it doesn't make much of a difference between the M1 and M1 Pro, but the M1 Ultra is really fast, and it takes about half the time to work on the M1.

Export speed comparison. Please note that the shorter the result, the better the result. The M1 to M1 Pro didn't make a dramatic difference, but the M1 Ultra cuts the time by half.

It's not just the benchmarks that have four or five times the performance of the M1, but it definitely works "faster than any Mac today and most Windows PCs."
