Emoji is a useful way to express your feelings by email or chat. However, apart from the iPhone that can put out the emoji keyboard immediately, there should be some people who are confused and estranged in the case of Mac. Also, it is difficult to use the method of inputting words such as "Egao" and "Nikoniko" and converting them into laughing emojis because it is not possible to list what types are available. You can use an emoji input app, but it's also a hassle to find and install.
Emoji viewer. You can enter it by double-clicking the emoji or selecting it with the arrow keys and pressing "enter".
However, in OS X 10.9 "Mavericks", you can now open the emoji viewer in one shot by simply pressing the "command" + "control" + "space" keys. It looks and categorizes like a keyboard such as an iPad or iPhone, so you can use it in the same way.
Furthermore, the gray icon at the bottom shows the category, and if you look to the right, you can also select special characters and symbols.
You can move categories using the "tab" key.
The clock icon on the far left shows the history and "frequently used items". To register an emoji in "Frequently Used Items", first press the button in the upper right corner of the viewer to switch to "Character Viewer". If the icon isn't in the upper right, scroll up and it should appear. All you have to do is select the "Emoji" category, specify the item, and click the "Add to Frequently Used Items" button. You can return it to a compact state by pressing the button on the upper right again.
To add to "Frequently Used Items", press the button on the upper right to display the character viewer and add it.
By the way, it used to be a character viewer that could be selected from the menu bar, but it has been hidden in Mavericks. If you use it frequently, open "Keyboard" from "System Preferences" and check "Show Keyboard Viewer and Character Viewer in Menu Bar" to appear in the menu. The "keyboard viewer" is a function that allows you to enter characters by clicking the virtual keyboard on the screen. For example, it can be used as an emergency measure when only the "Return" key fails.
Check "System Preferences"-> "Keyboard"-> "Keyboard" tab-> "Show Keyboard Viewer and Character Viewer in Menu Bar"
If you can open the palette immediately, you should be able to use the sentences of expressions that actively utilize emoji. One thing to note is that if you don't use "Unicode" as the character set, some characters may be garbled. Rough exchanges such as using emoji will not be a problem, but if you want to be on the safe side, it's a good idea to casually check the environment of the other party.
